Wooden Basement Vs. Concrete Basement

Traditional concrete foundations and basements have a number of benefits, but wooden basements have become more prevalent in recent years due to benefits this design offers. To choose which option is right for your home, you need to look at the benefits and pitfalls of both choices.
  1. Concrete Foundations and Basements

    • Concrete is one of the most popular and traditional building materials, especially for use in constructing the foundations and basements of buildings. Concrete is strong, relatively low cost and not overly susceptible to water damage. Concrete basements are sturdy, easy to clean and, as long as the concrete is poured or installed properly, can be expected to last for decades. Concrete basements are typically constructed using either poured concrete or concrete blocks. Poured concrete is generally considered to be stronger and less likely to suffer structural problems than concrete blocks.

    Concrete Basement Problems

    • Concrete basements and foundations are prone to cracking because concrete is very rigid and does not handle the movement of soil and structures well. Cracks in your foundation and basement walls can be expensive to repair and are generally considered to be a structural flaw when you have your home inspected or are trying to sell it. Concrete can be difficult to pour in cold or wet weather and, if it doesn't set properly due to these conditions, can cause significant structural issues.

    Wooden Basements

    • Wooden basements and foundations can be a good option in areas where the ground shifts regularly and concrete foundations are prone to significant cracking. Wooden basements are generally considered to be more attractive than concrete basements as well as easier to remodel and finish. Wooden basements are also easier and less expensive to repair in the event that a problem does develop.

    Wooden Basement Problems

    • Wooden basements do not have the time-tested reliability of concrete basements. While a properly constructed wooden basement should last for many years to come, problems may arise due to moisture. If the wood used to build the basement is not treated correctly, the wood may rot due to moisture and cause structural failures. The wood is typically treated to prevent termite damage.
