Instructions

    • 1

Spread mulch around the perimeter of your porch's foundation. Adding at least 3 inches of mulch helps the rainwater become absorbed in the mulch, rather than splashing up to the porch.

    • 2

Extend your gutters so that they are further away from the porch if the rainwater results from splashing from the gutter system. Attach a sloped leader to the gutter and ensure that the gutter runs the water 10 feet away from the porch.

    • 3

Install drip-edge flashing if the splashing is coming from the roof dripping. Drip edge flashing is used along a roof's eaves and helps to guide water into the gutters to avoid water damage to the roof Nail the drip edge onto the roof sheathing with a hammer and roofing nails. Space the nails out every 12 inches, and leave a 1/4-inch gap between the drip-edge flashing and the roof sheathing's edge.

    • 4

Shovel piles of dirt near the porch's foundation, building up a 6-inch slope that slopes downward on the 10 feet nearest the porch. This will help the rainwater slide down the slope, rather than splash onto the porch.

    • 5

Extend the roof line or add storm chambers to the roof to help guide the water away from the porch and prevent splashing.

    • 6

Screen in your porch. Screens can help prevent backsplash from rainwater from accumulating on the porch.
