How to Install a Sill Plate Without Anchor Bolts

Sill plates need to be properly anchored to secure a wall to a floor or foundation. Usually anchor bolts are installed when the concrete for a foundation or slab is poured. Sometimes you need to install a sill plate in a location where no anchor bolts are present. You can install a sill plate without using anchor bolts. You can use a special tool to anchor the sill plate to the floor or foundation.

  • Powder-actuated tool

      Put on the safety glasses and ear protection. Safety gear should be worn when using a powder-actuated tool.

      Place the sill plate in the desired location. Place a pencil mark on the sill plate to indicate where a fastener needs to be installed. The mark should be near the center of the sill plate.

      Open up the powder-actuated tool. Place a fastener head first into the muzzle of the tool. Push the fastener all the way into the tool. Put a charge into the tool. Follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding loading and operating the powder-actuated tool.

      Place the muzzle of the tool on a pencil mark. Push the tool down firmly against the sill plate. Pull the trigger on the tool to shoot a fastener through the sill plate to connect it to the floor. Repeat this procedure to add additional fasteners.
