How to Build a Flat Sheetrock Ceiling

Sheetrock is a brand of drywall, also called gypsum board. This durable building fabric is one of the most common construction materials for use in forming the interior surfaces of walls and ceilings. Sheetrock covers the underlying wall studs or ceiling joists, hiding the insulation, electrical wires and plumbing, while providing a smooth surface for painting, paneling, texturizing or wallpapering. Although Sheetrock works well on vaulted ceilings, it also makes a suitable material for forming a flat ceiling.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a drywall lift to raise the sheet of Sheetrock to the ceiling and maneuver it into place. Put the first sheet of Sheetrock into one corner, placing it perpendicular to the rafters. Press the edge of the Sheetrock firmly into the corner, making sure the far edge reaches to the center of a joist. If the far edge fails to reach to the center of a joist, you will need to cut it to fit.

    • 2

Cut the Sheetrock by measuring it and marking it with a pencil. Score the pencil mark with a razor knife, cutting through the layer of paper. Snap the scored edge of the Sheetrock off along the scored line. Lift the cut piece of Sheetrock into place, pressing it against the ceiling with the drywall lift.

    • 3

Attach the piece of Sheetrock in place by screwing the drywall screws into the joists along the outside edges of the Sheetrock every 12 inches. Use a power drill and drywall bit.

    • 4

Load another sheet of Sheetrock into the drywall lift and butt it up next the first sheet of Sheetrock. Cut the far edge to fit against the center of the joist. Attach this piece of Sheetrock in the same manner as the first piece. Attach all the pieces of Sheetrock to the flat ceiling in this fashion, attaching them with screws along the outside edges.

    • 5

Attach the inside portion of the pieces of Sheetrock after you have all the sheets in place. Place screws along the underlying ceiling joists every 12 inches.

    • 6

Mix the drywall joint compound according to the package instructions. Use a drywall mud trowel to fill in the joints and screw hole dimples with the damp compound, wiping firmly to remove any excess mud. Press the drywall joint tape over the joints. Let the damp compound dry. Go over the joints and screw hole dimples a second and third time to create a smooth, even finish. Sand the flat ceiling lightly to remove any slight bumps and irregularities.
