Decide on a location for your arbor. An arbor can stand over the stairs of the deck, or it can span over the width of the deck, for example.
Choose a style for your arbor. Look through home and garden magazines or look at examples of prefabricated arbors for inspiration for your do-it-yourself project.
Take measurements for the length, width and height of your arbor. Use a measuring tape and to determine these dimensions over the area where you want to install your arbor.
Purchase the materials for your arbor. Select wood posts that will withstand the elements, such as cedar or pressure-treated lumber. Use 4- by 4-inch wood posts for the posts of the arbor and two-by-fours for the top of the arbor. Purchase enough wood to equal the dimensions, plus 20 percent more to allow for cuts and errors. Buy panels of already-constructed wooden lattice to go over the top of the arbor. Concrete will be needed to secure the posts into the ground. Use galvanized screws, nails and bolts to secure the posts together.
Gather the tools for the project. You'll need a post-hole digger to dig the holes for the supports of the arbor. A wheelbarrow will serve as a basin for mixing concrete, and a shovel will allow you to put the concrete around the posts in the ground. You'll also need a reciprocating saw to make cuts in the wood and a hammer and a drill to attach wood together. A level and tape measure will help to ensure accuracy of the structure.
