How to Procedure for Pouring a Concrete Footer With Rebars

Some concrete foundations and block walls require an additional structure built beneath them for needed support. This support, known as a concrete footer, helps to distribute the weight over a larger area, decreasing the chances of the foundation settling unevenly beneath the structure, causing structural damage in the process. Pouring the footer is much like pouring the foundation slab, including positioning the rebar throughout the footing before the pour to reinforce the concrete and limit cracking.

Things You'll Need

  • Rebar
  • 1-1/2-inch wooden blocks
  • Wire ties
  • Cement mixer

Instructions

    • 1

Line the base of the footings with 1 1/2-inch square wooden blocks running in parallel rows down the center of the footing length with a foot of space between the rows, and a foot of space between each block along the row. Lay two rows of rebar, cut to fit the length of the footing minus 5-inches on each end as a gap between the end of the bar and the form’s side, on top of the blocks. Secure the bars in position by tying a metal tie around the blocks and the bar, raising the bar within the footing area. Add 90-degree bent rebar to the form center, tying it in place to the ends of the straight bars.

Build the form for your foundation on top of the footing form, with the foundation edge above the center of the footing forms.

    • 3

Mix the concrete for the footing in a cement mixer, pouring the concrete mix into the mixer, followed by half of the water required by the concrete manufacturer. Mix within the mixer until all of the water is incorporated, and then add the second half of the liquid, mixing that in fully as well.

Pour the concrete into the footer, working from one corner of the footer and then dragging the concrete down the footer length with the spade. Keep pouring until the footer is filled to the rim of the footer form.

Level the footer with a wood screed by dragging the screed along the rim of the footer. Allow the concrete to dry overnight to firm enough before beginning the foundation slab.
