How to Install a Metal Roof That Won't Have Condensation

Moisture control in the home is critically important, given the frustrating and expensive damage that excess indoor moisture can cause. Since moisture can enter into the home from many different places, moisture control measures should be implemented everywhere, from the roof down to the foundation. Even considering the physical characteristics of the roof, such as construction materials and the shape of the roof, can have an important bearing on the most effective moisture control efforts.

Things You'll Need

  • Breathable synthetic underlayment (felt paper)
  • Vapor diffusion retarder (rigid foam insulation, reinforced plastic, aluminum or stainless steel)
  • Soffit, ridge and gable vents
  • Rafter vents

Instructions

    • 1

Install a breathable synthetic underlayment layer underneath the metal roof. Underlayment provides a layer through which moisture on the surface of the metal roof cannot penetrate; breathable underlayment does not trap vapor inside a roof system as other types of underlayment do.

Add a vapor diffusion retarder on the warm side of the roof. Many materials can be used for this purpose, including rigid foam insulation, reinforced plastic, aluminum and stainless steel. Purchase any material labeled as a vapor barrier or vapor diffusion retarder and with a perm rating of less than 1.0. Install the material on the ceiling, according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Ventilate the attic. This is an essential and often overlooked part of preventing moisture problems on a residential roof. Ventilate the attic with soffit, ridge and gable vents and keep them clear of debris and obstructions. Install rafter vents in between the attic rafters and keep the insulation well maintained.
