How to Add a Concrete Perimeter to a Post and Pier

A post and pier foundation is made up of several piers that are placed beneath a home as a structural support system. This type of foundation is not completely closed off from the elements, which can cause a variety of problems for the homeowner. It is possible, however, to add a concrete perimeter to a post and pier structure to gain a completely sealed off foundation.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove soil between the piers 16 inches deep and 16 inches wide. Loosen the soil with a pickax. Remove the soil with a square shovel. Place a 4-foot level in the bottom of the footer trench to level the footer.

    • 2

Lay two pieces of rebar in the bottom of the footer. Place the rebar on concrete bricks to raise it off the floor of the footer.

    • 3

Drill four 3/8-inch holes into the sides of the piers where the piers face each other. Place a 1/2-inch rebar that is eight inches long onto the holes. These rebar ties the concrete perimeter to the concrete piers.

    • 4

Place 3/4-inch plywood on the front and back sides of the piers, enclosing the spaces between the piers. Drill 1/4-inch holes into the concrete piers with the concrete drill bit and hammer drill. Attach plywood to the front and back of the piers with 3/16-inch concrete screws.

    • 5

Drill a 3-inch hole at the top of each piece of plywood on the outside of the piers. Pump concrete into the holes with a concrete pump truck. Fill the space between the piers with concrete. Tap the sides of the plywood with a hammer to remove bubbles and to settle the concrete gravel. Allow the concrete to set for 24 hours, and remove the plywood.
