How to Build a Sunroom From a Kit

In most climates, there are seasons when you would like to enjoy the outdoors but the weather is prohibitive, and a sunroom addition can solve that problem. Also called an all weather room, sun porch or Florida room, the area provides an enclosed addition that has the feel of the outdoors in a weather-protected environment. The materials, size and shape of these types of rooms vary, and a kit is the most cost effective, convenient method to construct one.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area of the exterior where you are planning to add the sun room. Examine the area for any problem issues, such as utility connections or boxes on the exterior, variations in height or exterior windows the room will enclose. A location where a door already exists to the outside is optimal as this saves cutting a new entry into an existing wall. Likewise, a location with a patio slab already installed saves adding one to support the addition.

    • 2

Design your sunroom based on the custom measurements of your area, the preferred materials you want to use and your budget. There are pre-assembled kits in standard sizes for less money, or you can create a custom built kit to your exact specifications. Your budget also needs to include things that are not in the kit such as a foundation if one does not exist, electrical wiring if you will be adding it, and any necessary permits for building. Purchase the best materials you can afford for the sunroom for a quality addition.

    • 3

Check with your local building department about permits and submit your plans for approval.

    • 4

Set a block foundation, pour the slab or have one built for your sunroom addition. If you are not experienced in this kind of work, it is best to have a professional take care of this step so the sunroom will be on a solid foundation.

Read the installation instructions carefully. Your custom built kit will be designed to your exact specifications, but may still need minor adjustments. The standard kits are not fit exactly to your home but if your exterior surface is clear of any modifications, installation should be simple. Be sure you know how the frame fits together and the workings of the sunroom pieces before you begin.

    • 6

Assemble the frame components of your sunroom walls. The frame pieces should fit together easily and will have instructions on connecting them with the hardware provided in your kit. If you encounter any difficulties be sure to stop and resolve the issue before moving on, as any incorrect framing will result in having to tear apart and re-do the job.

    • 7

Install the base and flooring first. Make sure your surfaces are level before adding the wall frame structures. When you have everything squared, begin attaching the wall frames to the base and the exterior of your home.

    • 8

Install the wall materials. Your sunroom can be a variety of styles, from screened panels to fully glazed thermal windows, or both. The windows and screen panels should easily fit into the frame spaces if you install them correctly.

    • 9

Install the roofing material last. The roof can be glazed panels in specialized types of plastic or Plexiglass, a solid vinyl roof cap or a combination. The roof should also install easily onto the frame if you assemble the pieces correctly; however, this step may require machinery to lift heavy sections. Renting a crane truck or forklift to raise the panels in place may be necessary.

Weatherproof your sunroom with the recommended materials, such as silicone caulk or fiber weatherstripping. The kit will supply some of these materials and suggest others you can purchase for additional protection.
