How to Use Magnets and RO Units

Magnets and reverse osmosis (RO) are two common ways to soften hard water in the home. Hard water is formed by the absorption of minerals that then creates layers of limescale in pipes and appliances. Not only is this expensive for the homeowner in cleaning chemicals, it also has an effect on heating efficiency. Unlike other water softener treatments, water treated with magnets or reverse osmosis is safe to drink and so, units and magnets can be fitted to the entire water supply of the property.

Instructions

    • 1

Fit the magnet water conditioner or reverse osmosis unit to the main water supply for the building. This is usually located beneath the kitchen sink.

    • 2

Install a second water conditioner or unit to the exit pipe of the cold water tank. This is not necessary in a small house unless the water stays in a water tank for more than 24 hours.

    • 3

Add additional units or magnets to the exit pipe of the hot water tank and other pipes leading to separate rooms or appliance, if necessary. This is only relevant for larger buildings.
