How to Set Up a Home Gym Punching Bag

If you intend to build a home gym and want to include boxing in your training program, a punching bag is a required feature. A traditional punching bag is usually hung from ceiling joists, and this kind of punching bag is a logical choice if you already have exposed joists in your gym space. If the ceiling supports are covered by drywall or plaster or there simply are no accessible supports, the alternative is setting up a free-standing punching bag.

Instructions

  1. Traditional Punching Bag

    • 1

Place a stepladder below that part of the ceiling you want to use, step up and place the punching bag mount between the ceiling joists. Mark the joists and/or floorboards through the mount's screw holes with a pencil.

    • 2

Fit a drill bit one size smaller than the screws that came with the mounting kit into your drill. Drill holes where you marked with the pencil.

    • 3

Fit the ceiling mount back into place so the screw holes in the mount and the joists/floorboards align. Drive screws through the holes with a screwdriver.

    • 4

Hang a punching bag spring from the eye hook in the ceiling mount. Instruct an assistant to hold up the punching bag if it is too heavy to lift with one arm. Hook the chains from the punching bag into the eye hook.

    Free-Standing Punching Bag

    • 5

Carry or wheel the punching bag into the area you have chosen for setting it up. If this is a two-piece free-standing punching bag, place the base on the floor as desired. For a one-piece free-standing bag, set the entire apparatus down.

    • 6

Unscrew the cap of the tank that forms the base of the punching bag if it is a one-piece unit. Insert a large funnel and shovel sand into the base. Replace the cap. The punching bag is now properly weighted and ready to use. If you have a two-piece free-standing bag, skip to Step 3.

    • 7

Fill the doughnut-shaped sandbag that came with the two-piece punching bag with sand and zip them shut. Slide these bags over the base of the punching bag, threading the pole through the hole in the middle of the sandbag.

    • 8

Slide the bottom of the pole from the top half of the two-piece punching bag into the pole from the base section. Fasten the two sections together either by tightening the built-in bolt with an Allen wrench or sliding a bolt into the bolt hole, threading a nut onto it and tightening that nut with a wrench, depending on the design.
