How to Build an Aluminum Addition

Aluminum additions, such as a sunroom, greenhouse or enclosed patio, can be constructed with 2-inch by 6-inch (2x6) wood framing for the walls and roof, installing aluminum windows and cladding to the exterior and applying insulation and waterproofing. A second option is to use a prefabricated kit of aluminum and glass. Although a prefabricated kit sunroom cannot be connected to your heating and cooling system, they are much less expensive and easier to construct. Both types of aluminum additions require a sturdy foundation.

Instructions

  1. How to Install a Prefabricated Aluminum Sunroom Kit

    • 1

Prepare foundation. Options include a 6-inch height poured-in-place concrete pad, finished wood deck, level patio or kneewall made from wood, brick, concrete pavers or stone.

    • 2

Lay out bottom rails in the exact place you want to install the sunroom and attach to wood deck, concrete pad or kneewall with lagbolts or masonry screws, ensuring all angles are at 90 degrees.

    • 3

Where the two bottom rails abut the house, attach a vertical rail to the house with lagbolts, ensuring that they are securely fastened to an interior stud, concrete block or brick wall. For additional support, you can attach a 2x6 to the wall first.

    • 4

Attach the ledger on top of the two vertical rails with lagbolts.

    • 5

Assemble vertical and horizontal rails into an L-shape on the ground, then lift and secure into place. Continue like this until all aluminum rails are installed.

    • 6

Attach glazing and door with the included assembly pieces.
