Getting a Permit for a Deck

Before you construct, or have a contractor construct, a deck on your property, you'll likely need a building permit. A building permit is relatively easy to obtain. It simply requires filling out an application. You'll also need to provide necessary paperwork to substantiate your application. A building permit is also relatively inexpensive. Expect to pay between $40 and $300, depending on your specific location and the work to be done.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your city hall or the department that's in charge of building and obtain a blank application and a copy of the deck permit guidelines.

    • 2

Read over the entire application, along with the instructions, to ensure you understand them. Call the city hall or building department if you have any questions. Then, fill out the application.

    • 3

Gather together the required paperwork that will be submitted with the building permit application. At the minimum, you'll need a deck plan that shows the size and construction specifications. A copy of a property survey with the deck drawn on it will probably also be required. It will help officials determine whether the finished project will fall within the rules and regulations.

    • 4

Submit the completed building permit application, the substantiating paperwork and the appropriate fee to the city hall or the building department.

    • 5

Wait for your building permit application to be reviewed. It will either be approved or denied.
Typically, it will be two to three weeks until you are contacted.
