Identify the location in which you want to build your deck. Determine the size you want the completed deck to be. Measure the location with a measuring tape. Be sure the location does not conflict with the surroundings, such as interfering with a garage entrance.

    • 2

Speak with your local government building official or building inspector to identify any building or zoning requirements, and apply for any applicable building or zoning permits. Do not begin your deck’s construction before you have obtained the applicable permits. Construction without the necessary permits could result in fines and penalties.

    • 3

Make a list of the materials and tools you will need to construct the deck. Check off the items on the list as you gather them. Include the appropriate amount of deck boards on your list, as well as chalk for markings, a water leveler, a post-hole digger, joist hanger, j-bolts, carriage bolts and mason cord. Include tool items on the list as well, including items such as a hammer, power drill, nails, screws, and safety glasses. Include safety gloves on your list to protect your hands while working.

Complete research to obtain deck instructions that match the deck that you want to construct. Speak with a local home improvement specialist for assistance; home improvement stores often have deck plans and instructions on site for their customers.

    • 5

Read and review each step of your deck plans, before beginning, to ensure that you understand the steps and have the appropriate items needed to complete the construction. Review your checklist as you review your construction plans and update the list, as needed.

Prepare the ground for the deck. Remove any grass from the area and line the ground with gravel or cement to prevent the area from decaying after the deck is in place. Allow several days for the area to dry if you lay cement in the area. Begin your deck’s construction once your preparations are complete.
