How to Convert a Deck to a Sun Room

A deck extends the living space of your home into the outdoors, but if you live in a region that doesn't experience warm weather year-round, you likely only enjoy the space part of the year. If you want to enjoy this outdoor space regularly, turn it into a sun room. The addition of windowed walls and a ceiling will allow you to experience an outdoor-like atmosphere within a climate-controlled environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the building codes in your area and obtain proper permits to convert the deck into an enclosed structure. Different locations have different codes and permits, and you'll need to obtain such information to build a structure that is safe and legal.

    • 2

Create walls for the space. Create frames for the walls with two-by-fours. Add electrical wires to the space for lighting and power outlets. Install insulation, plywood and sheetrock on the bottom portion of the walls. Install double-paned windows on the top half of the walls.

    • 3

Cover the deck area with a ceiling that slopes away from the house. Use two-by-fours to frame out the ceiling and cover the frame with plywood and waterproofing insulation. Install any permanent lighting and wiring. Cover the outside portion of the ceiling with shingles and cover the inside portion with sheetrock. Cover the outside walls with siding that matches the exterior of your home -- vinyl siding, bricks or wood shingles, for example.

    • 4

Install flooring in the space. Insulate the existing floors and cover them with plywood to create subfloors. Cover the plywood with a flooring material of your choice -- laminate or carpet, for example.

Furnish and decorate the space to suit your taste. Bring in couches, chairs and tables. Hang curtains on the windows. Bring in collectibles and photographs to add personal touches to the sun room.
