How to Install a Fresh Air Kit for Wood Stoves

A wood stove is a warm and pleasant addition to any home, but a safe installation is essential. In houses such as mobile homes, you must install a fresh air kit, which feeds the stove's combustion with outside air. If the room in which the stove is placed lacks fresh air and there is no kit installed, it can create a suffocating situation. This kind of airtight environment is relatively common in newer, well-insulated homes. Luckily, the installation can be done with simple materials. The fresh air kit usually contains a flexible hose or pipe, a termination piece such as a hood, clamps and additional accessories.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a fresh air kit with flex piping that is compatible with the size of the air intake valve on the back of the stove.

    • 2

Cut a hole of an appropriate size, using a jigsaw, all the way through the exterior wall where the intake piping will pass through. You can complete the cut from the inside or the outside, as long as it is a complete hole. The installation of the main vent piping should already be completed by this point.

    • 3

Place one end of the flex pipe over the intake hole of the stove. Secure it with metal clamp or according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 4

Hold the interior wall plate in place over the interior opening in the wall. Direct the piping through the hole, but do not push it all the way through until you have set the outside wall plate in place.

    • 5

Secure the metal screen to the exterior wall plate.

    • 6

Continue passing the pipe through the wall. Secure the end of the pipe to the inside of the exterior wall plate, using a clamp.

    • 7

Mount the inside and outside wall plates to the walls with fasteners compatible with your wall materials. Drywall screws for the interior and lag bolts for the exterior are usually appropriate. Adhere to the manufacturer's instructions to secure the installation.

    • 8

Install a weather hood at the end of the pipe and secure it with metal screws or as directed. The weather hood will protect the intake pipe from water and other weathering.
