How to Install a Corrugated Chimney Liner

Installing a corrugated chimney liner is an ideal option when you are retrofitting a chimney. You must install a stainless steel liner, rigid or corrugated, to use your fireplace, wood stove or other appliance. The liner reduces the flue down to a reasonable size so gas and debris can safely vent out of your home. Corrugated steel liners are flexible, which means they expand in response to heat and prevent creosote buildup. Their flexibility makes them easier to extend down the length of your chimney.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a chimney liner that fits the flue collar of your stove, for the safest installation. Follow the appliance manufacturer's instructions for liner type and size, if you are retrofitting the chimney for these additions. Use only Underwriters Laboratory-approved liners, or another liner approved for your purpose.

    • 2

Clean the chimney of all debris before beginning installation.

    • 3

Attach the flue collar connector to the bottom end of the piping, securing as directed by the manufacturer. This may involve tightening a ring clamp with a screwdriver, which will be further tightened and secured to the flue collar of the appliance down below.

    • 4

Attach a length of rope to the bottom connector and send it down the chimney to your partner. Have your partner pull the liner down while you guide it, using care not to damage the liner on its way down.

    • 5

Secure the flue collar connector into the flue collar of the stove or appliance.

    • 6

Cut the top section of the liner with tin snips so it extends 4 inches above the chimney crown.

    • 7

Apply silicon caulking around the chimney crown and secure the top plate into the protruding flex pipe. Tighten the securing ring of the top plate around the flex pipe. Set the rain cap over the top plate and tighten the securing band with a screwdriver.
