How to Build a Room

If you need additional living space, building a room can be cheaper than purchasing a new home. Of course, this isn't an easy process, and setbacks are common. Still, with careful planning and a little research, you can complete a room addition within a few weeks.

      Decide where to build the extra room. If you have a lot of land or available space, you can likely build the room on any side of the home. On the other hand, if you have limited space, you may have to construct the new room towards the back of the home.

      Contact a lender and arrange financing. Room additions are costly. If you don't have the funds to complete the project, you'll need a loan. Call your mortgage lender and inquire about a home equity loan or cash-out refinance. Both options provide funds for home improvement projects.

      Visit local zoning office and acquire necessary permits. In most instances, the builder or contractor acquires the permits. However, if tackling the project yourself, you'll need to apply for a building permit. In addition, the zoning office determines the maximum size for room additions.

      Look for a general contractor. Building an extra room is no easy task, and you'll need several different types of contractors (plumber, electrician, carpenter) Hiring a general contractor is the best way to handle the project. The general contractor plans the project and hires the workers.

      Read the contract before signing. Most contractors are reliable. Still, it's important to carefully read the construction contract before signing. Look for information that pertains to the final price and project length.
