How to Install Insulation Batting

Installing insulation in your walls is one of the most economical ways of cutting down on your heating and cooling costs. It is simple to apply, easily available and immediately efficient. Choose insulation with an R-Value appropriate to your needs. The denser it is the higher the rating and the more insulating properties it has.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the wall spacing between the studs. This is the length of your batting. Unroll enough blanket and cut the paper and fiberglass with a sharp utility knife.

    • 2

Stuff the batting into place with the paper side out and allow the paper edge to lay over the studs on both sides.

    • 3

Staple the batting into place every six inches with a staple gun, being careful not to flatten the insulation. The fluffier it is, the better insulating qualities it has. Also, be sure the staples lay flat against the stud so they don't get in the way of wall boards to be installed later.

    • 4

Turn the insulation sideways to fill in areas that are wider than the standard 16-inch stud width. Cut it an inch longer than the opening and staple it in place.

    • 5

Cut out areas in the batting for wiring, plumbing, and other obstacles being careful to leave the paper in one piece if possible. In areas of higher humidity, place a vapor barrier of poly sheeting over the insulation, especially on the ceilings of attics.
