Getting Started

  Draw or purchase building plans for your garage. These plans will be the layout for how you want your garage to look as well as determining the size of the garage and how much room you'll have.

  Get information about all the local zoning laws in your area and sign the appropriate paperwork.

  Before you start to lay down the foundation you need to make sure the lot you are building on is graded. This ensures proper drainage away from your garage without causing damage to your neighbor's property as well.

  Mix the proper materials and lay the foundation of your new garage. Before laying the foundation, make sure that you are not going to be building on top of someone else's property and that you are within your own property lines.

  Put up the walls, and if your building plans contain any cut-outs for windows, make sure to make those in the walls and get those windows installed before working on the outer walls.

  Frame the roof and do other initial roofing work. After the initial work is you will be ready to lay the shingles.

  Install the initial electrical wiring in your garage. You should hire a professional electrician to make sure it is done properly and safely. If you happen to have electrical experience you can install it yourself, but if not, play it safe and get a professional to help you.

  Begin laying the brick and mortar to the outside walls.

Finishing Up

  Install your insulation and then hang your drywall up over top of the insulation. Painting the interior of your garage is all up to you and totally depends on how you want the interior to look. If you do decide to paint the interior, it's best to wait at least a day before you start.

  By this point your garage is ready to have the door and door opener installed. There are a lot of different types of garage doors, so shop around for one that suits your needs and budget.

  Move your cars or other personal items into the garage.
