How to Shingle a New Roof to an Old Roof

Adding a new roof to a house often time means replacing the shingles on the old roof. While this may sometimes be the case, in many instances the existing shingles can be saved, reducing the cost of the project as well as creating less waste in the landfill. With patience and practice, it is a simple task to shingle a new roof to an old roof.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the shingles within roughly two feet of the joint where the new roof joins the old roof. Since shingles are installed in a staggered pattern, the shingles ends will not all line up and that is preferable to having the ends all in the same line as that will permit water intrusion.

    • 2

Pull nails as needed from shingles that are not being removed to allow access to shingles that are being removed. Remove any nails left behind by the removed shingles.

    • 3

Apply felt paper to the new roof. Extend it onto the old roof to cover the seam and overlap it by about 18 inches or so.

    • 4

Start on the bottom course of shingles and install the first shingle by butting it up to the last existing shingle and nail it in place. If the last tab of the shingle in the row above it overlaps the new shingle, lift the bottom of the tab and nail the new shingle in place so that the tab will cover the nail head.

    • 5

Continue roofing to the edge of the new roof and repeat with each successive row of shingles until you have the new roof completed.
