Instructions

    • 1

Determine the locations of the support posts for your patio covering. Dig holes in each of these spots for Sonatube concrete forms. Set the forms in place in the hole, fill with concrete, and make sure that the tops of the finished concrete in all the forms are level and equal in height. These will be the post supports. Allow the concrete to dry for 24 hours.

    • 2

Using a masonry bit, drill 1/2 inch holes in the center of the concrete in each of the post supports.
Drop an expanding masonry anchor bolt into each hole. Attach a post anchor over each bolt and securely tighten the nut to the anchor bolt.

    • 3

Measure and cut 4x4 lumber for the support posts. These posts should be the same length as the height you have planned for each side of your patio covering. Set the posts in the post anchors and fasten, making sure that the posts are plumb.

    • 4

Build a frame for the roof from 2x6 lumber. Add 4 inches to the planned dimensions of each side of the finished patio covering to get the measurements for the frame. Screw the frame together at the ends in a rectangular shape and nail 2x4 roof joists to the frame, spacing them 16 inches apart on center. (see photo)

    • 5

Raise the roof frame and position it around the outside of all the support posts. Securely support and brace the roof frame temporarily. Drill holes through the roof frame and support posts. Fasten them together with heavy-duty stainless steel nuts, bolts and lock washers.

    • 6

Deck the roof with 5/8" plywood sheets. Cover the decking with asphalt roofing paper and shingle. Stain or paint the wood of your patio covering, and it is complete.
