Lay out the area for your patio and mark the locations for the deck blocks. The first row of blocks will be placed 12 inches in from the planned front edge of the deck and spaced every 24 inches on center. Mark spots for additional rows of blocks every 4 feet.
Dig out an area at each deck block location that is approximately the same size as the base of the deck block and 2 inches deep. Compact the soil well using a tamper. Fill the area with 2 inches of gravel and level. Position the deck blocks on the gravel beds at each location. Use a carpenter's level between each of the blocks and make sure that they are level.
Make the support posts that rest in the deck blocks. Do this by measuring and cutting 4x4 lumber to size according to your planned deck height. Mount the posts in the deck blocks.
Cut 2x6 rim joists and end joists to size and screw together at the ends to from the deck frame. Raise and position the frame onto the support posts and nail the end joists to the support posts.
Nail or screw joist hangers to both the rim joists, every 24 inches on center. Cut 2x6 interior joists to size, hang in the joist hangers, and nail or screw in place.
Cut the decking to size from 2x4 lumber and screw it to the joists in a pattern of your choosing. Stain or paint the deck.
