Instructions

    • 1

Mark the positions for the roof support posts on the ground. Dig holes in these spots to a depth of 18 inches and set Sonotube concrete forms in each of the holes. Fill the forms with concrete and set 4x4 post base connectors in the concrete, making sure they are level and all at the same height. Let the concrete dry overnight.

    • 2

Use 4x4 lumber and measure and cut support posts to length based on the planned height and slope of your roof. Set the posts in the post base connectors and fasten with the included nuts and bolts, making sure that they are perfectly vertical. Temporarily brace the posts as necessary.

    • 3

Measure, mark locations and drill holes on the top of the support posts for 4 inch bolts that will fasten the roof beam to the posts. Cut the beam to length from 2x6 lumber and drill corresponding holes to those on the posts so that the top of the beams are flush with the top of the posts. Raise the beam and fasten them to the posts with stainless steel nuts, bolts and washers.

    • 4

Measure and cut 2x8 lumber to the same length as your roof beam. Attach the 2x8 to the outside fascia board of the home's roof with lag screws and washers at every point there is a roof truss. Use heavy lag screws long enough to sink well into the roof rafters behind the fascia. Make crossbeams from 2x6 lumber that run from one end of the beam to the 2x8 on the fascia. Nail or screw into place.

    • 5

Fasten joist hangers with nails or wood screws every 24 inches on center to the 2x8 mounted on the fascia. Measure and cut roof joists from 2x4 lumber to a length that is the same as the distance from the fascia board to the roof beam and nail them to the joist hangers and beam.

    • 6

Deck the roof by nailing 5/8-inch plywood sheets to the roof joists and beams. Cover the plywood with asphalt paper. Tack the paper to the plywood with roofing tacks. Shingle the roof. Paint or stain the lumber to your preference and your roof is complete.
