Do it Yourself Garage Kits

A garage can serve not only as housing for your vehicles but it can also provide storage as well as workspace for you. There are many varieties of garage plans on the market today. You can find plans that range from simple metal construction to more complex structures designed to match the architecture of your home. A well-designed garage kit comes with all the parts as well as the materials you need to construct it.
  1. Design Your Garage Plans

    • Determine your garage's location. Decide what kind of foundation you want for your garage. Set a budget for building your garage.

Contact your local planning and zoning office to find out what requirements you must meet. Find out what you need to do to get a building permit for a garage kit. Begin that process as soon as possible so you have your permits in hand when the garage kit arrives.

Shop for garage plans that meet your specifications. Keep in mind your level of carpentry expertise. Watch any videos provided by garage kit manufacturers to make sure you understand the amount of work necessary to build the garage.

Order your garage kit. Make sure you know the shipping fees. Know when to expect delivery.

    Prepare for Building

    • Level the ground where you plan to build the garage. Install any drainage systems necessary before you start the building process. Build an access road to your garage.

Pour the concrete for the foundation if that is the type of flooring you chose. This is a portion of the job that you may want to contract out. Make sure to install the proper connecting bolts in the flooring. These bolts are necessary to anchor the walls in place.

Sort out all the pieces and parts when the garage kit arrives to make sure you have everything you need. Purchase any other materials not included in the garage kit. There should be a list that accompanies the garage kit. Read the directions carefully for building the garage.

    Erect the Garage

    • Assemble the wall portion of the garage kit. Many kits use a tongue-and-groove or peg system to connect wood pieces. Secure the walls to the floor.

Set the rafters in place. Assemble the roof structure and set it on the rafters. Attach the shingles.

Install windows and doors. Finish the garage exterior. Depending on the plan you chose, you may use siding or paint.
