Do it Yourself Screened Sunroom

You can add value to your home by building a DIY screened sunroom. You can easily create this additional living space by converting an existing deck or patio. The screens in your sunroom keep the insects out, plus the roof of the sunroom may add shade, making your existing deck or patio more comfortable throughout the warm days of summer.
  1. Determine the Options

    • Decide where you would like to install your DIY sunroom. Depending on the location you choose, you may need either a two- or three-sided screened sunroom kit. You should also decide if you can use an existing roof or shade or if you want that included in your kit.

Also consider the base. If you are setting the screened sunroom on a concrete patio, you need to make allowances for anchoring the sunroom into the concrete. Constructing a DIY sunroom on a wooden deck is an easier task.

    Look at Options

    • Study magazines and books that feature screened DIY sunroom products to see how they look against a variety of homes. Visit your local home improvement store to see what options they offer. Most sunrooms come in vinyl, wood or aluminum. Some sunrooms offer the ability to roll up the screens when not in use.

Find the screened sunroom that is right for you. Make sure that the measurements of the completed sunroom fit in the space you have available. While you can order custom-sized screened sunrooms, they cost considerably more.

    Prepare for Installation

    • Do any necessary repairs to the siding of your house before you add the sunroom. Also repair the decking if necessary. Secure the anchors to the concrete patio if that is what you are using as your floor.

Lay out the pieces of the sunroom kit. Read the instructions until you are thoroughly familiar with all the steps.

Gather all the tools and equipment you need to install your screened sunroom. In some instances, you may need multiple items such as ladders.

Plan to have at least one helper the day of the installation. Depending on your skill level, you may be able to finish the screened sunroom in a weekend, or it may take you longer.

    Install the Sunroom

    • Attach the connecting studs to the exterior of your house. Secure the base pieces to the decking or concrete floor.

Connect the pieces of the side wall according to the directions. Lay them out flat on the floor for assembly and then lift into place. Secure to the house. Repeat if there is another side wall. Connect the pieces of the front wall and set them in place as well.

Secure the roof pieces to the house and the front of the sunroom. Add the connecting braces for the roof. Set the roofing material in place and secure it.

Add any remaining brace pieces to the structure. Hang the door in the frame if it is part of your sunroom model.

Put the screens in place. Secure them with the fasteners included in the kit. Make sure to stretch the screens properly to keep insects out.
