Types of Saunas

Saunas are rooms or self-contained units that are heated to around 180 degrees Fahrenheit, with 25 percent humidity, for the purpose of relaxation. Saunas are a way of life in Finland and the first recognized saunas were written about there in the year 1112. Types of saunas include wood-burning saunas, smoke saunas, manufactured, electrically heated saunas and infrared saunas.
  1. Wood-Burning Saunas

    • Wood-burning saunas allow wood to burn slowly to establish a calming effect. Wood-burning saunas can be easily controlled by the sauna user and allow for care-free usage. These saunas can be found in commercial spas or residential homes.

    Smoke Saunas

    • Smoke saunas uses rocks over the course of hours to create a light, relaxing effect. Smoke saunas are used after a heating phase, flame-burning and room ventilation have been completed. These saunas are not commercially sold in the United States.

    Manufactured Sauna Rooms

    • Manufactured sauna rooms can provide soothing therapy and these electrically heated sauna rooms can be purchased as free-standing units. Manufactured sauna rooms make an ideal residential basement addition.

    Electrically Heated Saunas

    • Electrically heated saunas have been used since the 1950s and can be found in commercial or residential locations. These saunas are ideal for users who enjoy varied temperature controls.

    Infrared Sauna Room

    • Infrared sauna rooms are considered heat therapy rooms, since they use radiant heat instead of water. The radiant heat penetrates the body, which helps muscles relax. This type of room can be found in residential homes.
