How to Build Detached Garages

Measure the space to accommodate the new garage. Build a two-car garage if space and budget permit. Create framework for pouring a slab foundation 12 inches deep. Roll out metal gridwork to provide strength to the concrete. It's best to pour concrete for a garage floor as a single pour, vs. dividing it into sections.

Build the walls of cinder blocks. Place metal ties into the mortar to hold bricks that will cover the exterior. Leave an opening for one or two garage doors and a side exit door. Install metal beams across windows and all doors to support finished brickwork. Let the mortar dry for a couple of days. Install wooden framework to cap around the top perimeter of the blocks. This will support roofing framework. Install a breaker box. Run wiring for exterior light fixtures.

Hire a contractor with a crane to hoist prebuilt wooden trusses into place for the garage roof. Or, engage a contractor to build the framework for the garage roof from scratch. Build soffitting and enclose appropriate areas with masonry. Cover the roof with plywood and install asphalt shingles or metal roofing. Attach guttering and downspouts with splash blocks to catch rain runoff.

Brick the exterior of the garage. Paint all exposed wood, bare metal garage doors, soffiting and masonry in upper areas of the roof lines. Run electrical wiring for interior needs and exterior light fixtures. Attach exterior light fixtures.

Install garage doors and an exit side door in the spaces allotted. Connect all interior light fixtures and any outlets needed for a small workshop. Install an electric garage door opener.
