How to Draw Plans for a Patio Enclosure

Many homeowners choose to enclose their patios so they can enjoy the outdoor scenery year round. Styles may differ, but generally the enclosures feature large windows to allow light in and provide greater visibility, and they may have a door for outside access. All have three walls, a floor and an overhead ceiling. Creating a plan may seem daunting to novices, but with some forethought a well-devised plan can be drawn.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of each side of the patio, then write these measurements down on your paper for reference. Draw a square on the scratch paper that represents an overhead view of the patio, then write the measurements next to the lines to represent the walls. Write “HOUSE” on the side to identify which side faces the house. Add light lines to the square’s middle to indicate enclosure roofing (“purlins”).

    • 2

Draw another square below the overhead view to represent the height and length of each of the three walls. Add in the window spaces and multiply the height times the length to give the total wall space area.

    • 3

Subtract the length/height of the windows from the wall space for an accurate measurement. Write these measurements on the paper. Consult a licensed and knowledgeable contractor with the drawing for professional advice concerning measurements, suggested materials and estimated costs prior to transferring the drawing to actual blueprints.
