How to Build a Mobile Home Porch

A porch is a common addition to a mobile home. It offers additional space to relax and enjoy the outdoors. However, it must be built properly in order to last. Building the porch in the wrong way could damage the new structure and your home. A mobile home porch must be built separately from the main structure of the home, allowing the main structure to shift and move independently of the porch.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut four deck joist boards 6 feet long using a sliding miter saw. Connect them at the ends with 4-inch galvanized screws to form a 6-by-6 foot deck frame in the shape of a square.

    • 2

Cut 12 6 foot-by-2-inch lengths of treated decking boards with the miter saw and lay them across the frame, 1/4 inch apart. Secure the boards to the deck frame with 3-inch galvanized wood screws and a power driver or 3-inch long galvanized nails and a hammer.

    • 3

Install four concrete cinder blocks for footing piers at the four corners where your new deck will located. Level each with a carpenter's level, removing or adding soil to make them perfectly level.

    • 4

Measure the distance from the top of the footing piers to the bottom of your mobile home to find the height for your post beams. Cut four deck post beams to this height; typically it will be between 24 and 30 inches, depending on the height of your mobile home and the footing piers.

    • 5

Install the deck post beams to the underside of the deck by first applying a strong wood adhesive to the side of the deck post. Then set the post into place in the corner of the deck. Screw the post and joist together with 4-inch long galvanized wood decking screws and a power driver.

    • 6

Lift the deck onto the concrete footings with an assistant. Check that it is level with a carpenter's level. Slide wood shims under the deck posts until the deck is level.
