How to Add Sill Plates to Foundation Wall

A simple trick used by framing contractors makes adding the sill plates and foundation anchor bolts quick, accurate and easy. The setup is done prior to pouring the concrete in the wall and simplifies the installation of both the anchor bolts and sill plates once the concrete is poured. The method described can be modified for any sill configuration needed by revising the bolt placement or other project framing details.

Local and national building codes have specific requirements regarding anchor bolt spacing and size, and it is recommended that you consult the local building department before beginning this project.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark a line on the top of the foundation form or concrete block of the wall 6-inches from the outside face of the finished wall and each corner of the wall section where the sill is to be installed.

    • 2

Snap a chalk line between the marks on the top of concrete block. For concrete forms, proceed to Step 3.

    • 3

Use a tape measure to layout the foundation anchor bolt spacing for the sill, marking each location on the top surface of the form or concrete block across the full section of the wall. Be sure to place an anchor bolt location 6- to 12-inches from the end of the sill plate at any corner or joint point for longer sills.

    • 4

Cut a length of sill plate lumber to the length of the wall section and position over the layout completed in Step 3. Transpose the layout lines onto the sill board and use a hand square to mark the line across the top face of the sill board.

    • 5

Mark the midpoint of each layout line as the center of the anchor bolt holes in the sill. Use an electric drill with a ?-inch wood bit to drill a hole in the sill at each bolt location marked.

    • 6

Insert the threaded end of an anchor bolt through each drilled hole from the bottom side of the sill board, adding a flat washer and nut. Tighten the nut to where 2 or 3 threads show past the surface of the nut. Repeat at each drilled bolt hole in the sill board. Set aside for installation when the wall concrete is poured.

    • 7

Pour wall concrete to flush with the top of the forms or concrete block.

    • 8

Lower the sill plate section with the hooked end of the anchor bolts suspended downward into the freshly poured concrete, positioning the sill board’s edge flush with the outside face of the concrete wall. With the sill board in place, use a hammer or rubber mallet to gently tap the tops of the anchor bolts to remove any voids or air bubbles in the concrete around the bolts. Allow concrete to be cured to a solid prior to removing or adding framing to the sill board.

    • 9

Repeat Steps 1 through 8 for each individual section of foundation sill required.
