How to Build a Simple Timber Gate

If you have a garden or a side passage leading into your property, you'd probably like to build a gate that would keep the kids in and the animals out. Build a simple timber gate that's both functional and aesthetically appealing. Choose wood to match your timber wood fence. After the gate is finished, you can paint it, or leave it unfinished with a rustic, natural look.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the fence posts where you'll attach the gate. Dig two 1-by-2-foot holes and cement the fence post in the hole.

    • 2

Measure the opening for the gate with a tape measure, and calculate how many lengths of timber palings you'll need.

    • 3

Lay out the palings in the shape and arrangement that will make up the body of the timber gate. Lay another length of timber across the palings as the brace for the gate. Screw treated pine screws on the bracing with a screwdriver.

    • 4

Screw large T-hinges to the bracing rail on the side of the gate that will be attached to the fence post. Ask one or two friends to hold the gate in position for you, and screw the hinges into the posts. Leave a gap of about 12mm for the gate to be able to swing freely.
