Composite Decking Pros & Cons

A deck provides homeowners with a flat surface to place outdoor tables and furniture, and a place to enjoy good weather in their own backyards. Composite decks are constructed of both natural wood and synthetic elements such as plastic.
  1. Durability

    • Since they contain synthetic elements, composite decks will not warp when exposed to rain or other water. The decks are also very durable when dealing with other elements or impacts.

    Cost

    • Composite decks cost more than wood, vinyl or plastic decks, though their longevity and lack of necessary maintenance can save money in the long run.

    Maintenance

    • Composite decks do not require the constant maintenance that wood decks do, such as staining and refinishing.

    Environment

    • Recycled materials such as sawdust are used in the creation of some composite decks, which helps save trees and protects the environment.

    Support

    • Composite decks require additional support, often in the form of pressure treated wood. Pressure treated wood is enhanced and can be very expensive.
