How to Make an Electric Doorbell

Making an electric doorbell is a fairly easy project. You will need a push button, a battery, a bell, and some wire. All of these things can be purchased at a hobby shop. There are even kits you can buy that contain all of these components. It is also possible to make an AC doorbell, which eliminates the battery but introduces other problems.

Choose between an alternating current (AC) and a direct current (DC) doorbell. The difference is the power source. If the power comes from a battery, it is a DC circuit. If the power source is the house wiring, it is an AC circuit. If you choose AC, you will need a transformer to replace the battery.

Decide where the components will go, especially the bell and power source. You might have to install a small shelf for this. The bell should go someplace where it can be heard. In some cases you might want more than one bell, although this will require more power and two locations, one for each bell.

Understand the circuit, how to connect the components. This circuit is a loop that has all the components connected in one big circle. The power source, the bell and the push button can be connected anywhere in the loop. The wires should be as long as needed to connect the components together.

Drill a hole near the door and install the push button. Run two wires from the doorbell to the place where the battery (or transformer) and the bell are. Connect the bell and the power source into the loop. Test it out; no system is completely installed until it is thoroughly tested.
