How to Build a Bike Workshop

If you are a bicycle enthusiast and love riding and working on bicycles, having a bike workshop in your garage, spare bedroom, or backyard shed can be your space of solitude. Even the serious bike rider or racer should consider having their own bike workshop to upkeep their equipment and save on repairs. Some people have even been known to operate a part-time bike repair shop out of their own garage at home. Other than purchasing the necessary tools you will need to work on your bike, having pegboards for hanging your tools and a couple of work benches are essentials.

Instructions

  1. Assembling the Pieces

Cut the four-foot by eight-foot piece of pegboard into two two-foot by four-foot pieces using the table saw. Lightly sand the cut edge to remove any rough surfaces. Cut the eight-foot piece of one-inch by two-inch lumber into four two-foot sections. Cut the 1/2-inch piece of four-foot by eight-foot domestic plywood into two two-foot by four-foot pieces using the table saw. Sand the cut edges. Cut the two 12-foot pieces of four-inch by four-inch lumber into eight pieces that are three feet long. Take care to make sure all the cuts you make on the table saw are straight.

If you are building on a finished wall, use the stud finder to find the studs in the wall where you want to hang the pegboard. Hold a section of the pegboard up to the wall and estimate a height that will be comfortable for you. Mark the center of the pegboard on the wall with a pencil. Attach the four two-foot sections of the one-inch by two-inch pieces of lumber to the studs in the wall using the deck screws and use the center measurement as a guide for height. The pieces of pegboard are four feet wide so try to space the one-inch by two-inch pieces of wood as close to four feet apart as possible, given the distance between wall studs. Attach the two pieces of pegboard to the one-inch by two-inch pieces of wood using the deck screws.

Attach one three-foot piece of four-inch by four-inch lumber to each corner of the two-foot by four-foot section of domestic plywood using the deck screws. Repeat this process with the other pieces of lumber until you have two work benches. If you are setting the work benches on a hard surface that isn’t level, you may need to take an additional step and attach them to the wall for more support.
