How to Clean Swamp Cooler Stains From a Roof

Swamp coolers, also called evaporative coolers, consist of a large metal box that is usually mounted onto the roof of a home or building. The cooler contains wet pads through which it blows air, which results in a cool air that is piped indoors. Because of the constant flow of water, swamp coolers often leak onto the roof, where they deposit mineral stains such as calcium. Cleaning these stains takes some work but can be accomplished with basic household supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Go up onto the roof, using a ladder if necessary.

    • 2

Pour undiluted white vinegar directly on the area of the roof that has been stained by the swamp cooler.

    • 3

Scrub the stained area with a scrub brush until the stain starts to dissolve. If you are cleaning a flat roof and the stain is large, you can use a long-handled push broom to assist with the stain removal.

    • 4

Pour additional vinegar onto the stain if needed and continue scrubbing it until it is completely removed from the roof.

    • 5

Rinse the roof thoroughly with water from a garden hose for approximate five minutes to remove all traces of minerals and white vinegar.
