How to Bend Pipe for Greenhouses

Bending aluminum or steel pipe for use in greenhouses is accomplished with a manual conduit bending tool. The tool, called a conduit bender with handle, is usually cast iron or aluminum die-cast construction with bending degree scales and marks cast into it. Align the tool on the pipe at different marks on the scale for bending different angles in the pipe.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the distance from the end of the conduit to the middle of the bend and place a mark on the conduit. If the angle of the bend is unknown, use the chart supplied with the bender to determine the angle.

Pipe bending is started like this.

Lay the pipe on the floor and slip the head of the bender around the pipe and position it with the scale on the side of the bender aligned with the mark on the pipe. A 90-degree bend will have a different location than a 45-degree bend.

      A pipe bender's final step.

With one foot on the pipe to stabilize it, pull the handle slowly and firmly towards yourself. The bender head should have a beginning and ending mark to line up with depending on the angle of the bend. Start and stop the bend at these locations.
