Home Improvement Ideas for Adding on a Family Room

Family room additions add appeal and space to the room and also boost the home's value when done correctly. Before starting a family room addition, you likely need to secure a work permit for the project, especially if you are changing the structure of your house by removing or adding walls. Consult a contractor if you are not familiar with this kind of project.
  1. Sunroom

    • Sunrooms add living space to your family room area and provide a unique room for your house. They are framed mostly with wood and have lots of windows and glass doors to let in plenty of natural light. Add comfortable seating, several plants and maybe a bookcase filled with your favorite books so you or your family members can find a quiet moment alone with a book. Or make it more of a family hang out location with couches, tables and games.

    Porch

    • A porch adds a nice transition from family room to outside. Your porch can simply be a brick, stone or concrete patio with outdoor seating and a grill, or you can screen it in to keep the bugs out and use it during rain storms. Hot tubs are popular porch accessories that are sure to get your family excited about spending time on the new addition. You can also consider a built-in refrigerator to keep food and drinks cool, or even an outdoor kitchen and table to cook and eat outdoors when the weather is nice.

    Entertainment Wall

    • Build an entertainment wall or even a theater room off of your family room. Design the entertainment addition around its function: gathering the family together to watch movies, TV, listen to music or play games. Be sure to add enough comfortable seating for everyone in your family, plus areas to store board games, movies, music and video games. Get a nice high definition TV and all the proper components like a DVD or Blu-Ray player and a stereo. Set weekly movie nights with your family to enjoy the new addition.
