Deck Building Codes in Tucson, Arizona

Building codes in Tucson, Arizona, including deck building codes, are enforced by the Pima County Development Services. Pima County has adopted the 2006 International Building Code, as published by the International Code Council, Inc., Country Club Hills, IL, in January 2006. The county also includes local amendments in its code. It is a civil infraction for any person, firm or corporation to violate any of the provisions of the Pima County building code.
  1. Decks Requiring Permits

    • A permit is required for a deck greater than 30 inches above finish grade or floor level. A permit may be obtained in Tucson at the Building Safety and Sustainability office, located at 201 N. Stone Ave on the first floor of the Public Works Building at the northwest corner of the intersection of Stone Ave and Alameda St. You can also apply online at www.PimaXpress.com/Building.

    Decks Not Requiring Permits

    • No permit is required for a deck not more than 30 inches above adjacent grade, as long as it is not over any basement or storey below, not in a flood plain, and will not block an access route.
