How to Make a Gravel Pit for a Shed Base

Building a dry, solid base for your shed is vital to its long-term survival. Failing to do so can allow moisture to soak into the wood support structure, which can ruin your shed in weeks, and possibly even damage whatever tools, decorations or machinery you intend to store inside the shed. Building a proper foundation for your shed may be labor-intensive, but the actual process isn't that complicated.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out the dimensions of your shed on level ground.

    • 2

Place a wooden peg at each corner of the measured area.

    • 3

Run a string from each peg to the next. Make sure the string is taunt.

    • 4

Dig out the inside of the marked-off area to a depth of about 3 inches.

    • 5

Rake the inside of the foundation area to make it as level as possible.

    • 6

Lay down your plastic tarp inside the marked-off area. Keep the tarp as level as possible, and make sure it covers the entire area. While this step is optional, the tarp will help prevent the gravel from sinking into the ground, make it difficult for weeds and grass to grow up through your foundation, and help keep out moisture.

    • 7

      Lay down your gravel.

    • 8

Rake the gravel until it is even with the edge of your pit.
