How to Install a Clothes Dryer Duct

A clothes dryer duct releases lint and water vapor outdoors, allowing your house to remain humidity- and lint-free. Ducts are essential to proper ventilation and protect the home from the fire risk associated with lint buildup. Installing a clothes dryer duct can be a challenging do-it-yourself project, so reserve an entire weekend for completing this task.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut holes into the wall where the aluminum venting will run with a handsaw. Only make the holes large enough for the venting to fit though.

    • 2

Run the venting through the holes to the outside of the house.

    • 3

Support the venting every 3 feet with vent clamps and aluminum vent tape. Using this method instead of screws avoids lint buildup along the vent.

    • 4

Wrap 3 inches of insulation around the parts of the vent that run on the inside of the home. This prevents condensation from building up and causing problems.

    • 5

Secure a vent cap over the end of the aluminum venting. The most recommended kind will have a mini-lever door to block anything from coming inside.
