Contact your local municipality to find out what type of permit you will need to obtain. Most areas require a construction permit. You may need more than one, if you're adding features like electrical work or plumbing to your deck.
Find out the cost for the type of permit you need. The vast majority of permits to build a deck will cost between $40 and $300.
Obtain a detailed deck plan from the contractor building the deck, or you can create it yourself if you have the knowledge and expertise. You will need to submit the deck plan to get a permit.
Schedule a revised property survey with a local property inspector. Your city or county government may have an inspector on staff. You will also need to submit a copy of the revised property survey to get your permit.
Get the forms you need from your local building department. Fill out the forms entirely, and submit them along with the other paperwork you gathered. You should receive an answer within two or three weeks, but sometimes it can take longer. If you were approved, you will receive your permit to begin construction on your deck.
