How to Build a Soundproof Box

A soundproof box can help dampen the sound of an appliance by containing sound waves in a restrained area. Putting a noisy appliance inside a soundproof box will help to maintain peace and quiet in your home. The type of sound-proof box you make will depend on the size of the appliance and level of decibels created by the appliance. Soundproofing can be expensive. The cost will depend on the materials you use.

Instructions

    • 1

Glue or screw together the sides, top and bottom of five equal square measurements of a solid material to make the box. Attach a further equal-sized piece of material to hinges for the door and attach the hinges of the door to the open side of the box. The box must be a few inches larger than the appliance you are soundproofing.

    • 2

Attach a layer of carpet or your chosen soundproofing material to the inside of your box. If you are sound proofing a small sound, use egg boxes.

    • 3

Cut a piece of cardboard into small same size squares and cover these squares with your desired soundproofing material. Glue these individual squares to the inside of your box at a 90-degree angle.

    • 4

Place the box over the appliance and test how much you have reduced the decibel level. If you need the sound to be dampened further, add more soundproofing material.

    • 5

Cut ventilation holes in the bottom of the soundproof box to prevent the appliance from overheating.
