Information on Building a Carport

Protect yourself and your vehicle from natural and man-made elements by building a carport. It takes less time and money to build a carport than a garage. The structures can also house boats, recreational vehicles or serve as a play area.
  1. Design

    • A simple carport design can be as basic as a roof on stilts. A complicated design could feature a fully enclosed unit similar to a garage. The number of people required for assembly depends on the design and whether or not the concrete slab and footings are poured.

    Types of Metal

    • Most modern carports are constructed of aluminum, steel or insulated pre-assembled polystyrene foam core sheets covered with aluminum or steel. Aluminum is considered the most attractive, but steel is sturdier and cheaper. Prefabricated sheets look like wood, but have the durability of metal.

    Structures

    • A wooden carport unifies naturally with the look and design of the home. However, the price tag for wood is more expensive to maintain than metal. Pick a metal carport for fire resistance and less maintenance. Construction costs are lower with metal. Metal is also less likely to warp, crack or rot, and is termite-proof.
