How to Build a Metal Shed

Metal storage sheds are ideal in most climates for storing weather hardy possessions. Proper weather treated sheet metal is rust resistant and will last longer than rot-prone wood, is lighter and easier to assemble than a wood shed and can be taken down and reassembled elsewhere easily should the need arise. These types of sheds are so common that you can buy a metal shed kit at virtually any hardware store, in nearly any size and have it assembled in only a few hours.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down the shed kit's provided base, using a level on all four sides and in the middle to ensure that the base is level.

    • 2

Set the front, back and side floor frame pieces on the base and secure them there with the provided screws. A screwdriver is required for this.

    • 3

Position a corner panel in each corner of the base, fastening it with the provided screws to both the base and the floor frame.

    • 4

Secure a wall channel to each corner panel. This is done with the provided screws and washers.

    • 5

Install the wall angles (long metal tracks) along the back wall and sides. You will need to install two on each side, one at the top and the other at the middle. Each is attached to the corner panels with screws. There will be a pair of smaller angles that attach to the pair of front wall channels in the middle

    • 6

Screw in the door track above the door on the front side.

    • 7

Lift the wall panels into place along the sides and rear of your shed. They will attach at the bottom to the floor frame, at the middle to the corner angles and at the top to the upper corner angles. As with the rest of the construction, they attach at each point with screws.

    • 8

Place door jambs around the door and hold them in place with more screws.

    • 9

Install a roof beam bracket on each of the gables. They attach with screws.

    • 10

Put the gables together by using the screws and bolts provided to fasten together the right and left sides of each gable. Done correctly, you'll have two large triangular pieces of metal.

    • 11

Fasten a gable on the front and the back of the shed, attaching them with more screws.

    • 12

Attach the roof beam to the center support of each gable using the screws and bolts provided in your kit.

    • 13

Attach the remaining roof beams to the outer supports on the gables, again using the provided screws and bolts.

    • 14

Attach the narrow roof panels to the top of the gables and along the roof beams. As with the previous steps, this is done with the provided screws.

    • 15

Lay down the roofing panels between the narrow panels until the roof if fully formed. They attach with screws and washers at the peak and along the bottom.

    • 16

Cover the peak of the roof with weather stripping tape.

    • 17

Lay the ridge caps along the peak and the trim along the bottom of the roof panels, then screw them down.

    • 18

Standing inside the building, raise the door up so that its bottom is in the door track.

    • 19

Screw the doors into the door slides in the track you installed in step six.
