How to Build an Outdoor Cat Room

Cats are curious creatures, and the outdoors hold many fascinations for them. While many cats are strictly indoor animals, the wonders of nature still are

something they can enjoy safely. Building an outdoor cat room can ensure the owner feels secure with their pet being outside, and the cat can experience the fresh air. An outdoor playroom should contain things cats are drawn to, such as shelves and scratching posts. All the supplies can be found at local hardware and pet stores, and can be assembled in less than a day.

Extra large cage (5-foot tall cage would suffice)
3-4 wire shelves (with included bolts and screws)
Package of 100 9-inch cable ties
Piece of plywood large enough to fit in the bottom of cage
Indoor/outdoor carpeting
Staple gun
Screwdriver
Wrench
Scratching post

Instructions

  Secure the sides of the cage with cable ties. Place a dozen cable ties along each side of the cage, from the top to the bottom, fastening tightly.

  Cover the plywood with the indoor/outdoor carpeting by wrapping it around the wood, pulling it taut and stapling the carpet to the underside. Staple all four sides securely and flip the plywood over, placing it in the bottom of the cage by unscrewing the ceiling of the cage, and dropping the plywood into place.

  Place the cage outside where desired, either directly on the lawn, attached to a window with the cage door facing the window, or on a patio or deck.

  Cover the top of the shelves with the indoor/outdoor carpeting, securing with the staple gun. Place the wire shelves at varying heights in the cage. With the ceiling off the cage, it will be easy to slip the shelf into place. Secure the shelves tightly using the wrench with the provided bolts and screws for the shelves.

  Place the scratching post and any other toys your cat likes inside the cage. A litter box and food dishes also can be put inside the cage. Reattach the ceiling of the cage by screwing it tightly.
