How to Remodel and Add a Home Addition

Determine what type of home addition would best meet the needs of your family. There are many potential uses for the new space: a bathroom, bedroom, office or laundry area. However, even if you have the extra space in your yard to expand your home, check to see if there are any set-back issues with your property that might prevent you from building. Another option is to change the interior layout of your home to best utilize the existing footprint. Prioritize your renovation by making a list of your goals, and then make a few sketches of your ideas on graph paper.

Define your budget and pledge to stick within in. Home additions and renovations can be very expensive, so you might need to secure financing or transfer money from your savings account or investments.

Decide on an aesthetic for your renovation that is either modern or traditional. You may choose to drastically alter the look of your existing home, or make some small updates by repainting and adding a few enhancements, such as a special trim or moldings. Look through home design and decor magazines and clip images that you like for inspiration. Go to your local home-improvement store or other showrooms to gather samples of exterior and interior finishes to use in your home remodel and addition.

Hire an architect and contractor to guide you through the renovation process. Before you make your final decision, look through each of their portfolios and ask for references. Once you have decided on the right professionals for your project, discuss your goals with them and present your sketches, photos and material samples.

Check with your local building department to find out what types of building permits you need before you can begin work. Your architect or contractor will be able to handle the process for you.
