How to Join Interior Wall Studs

Interior wall studs are one of the building blocks of any room in a home. They are what everything else visible in the room is based on. These wall studs are typically installed 16 inches on center and have headers running along the top that keep them together. Joining interior wall studs is just one step in the process of installing an interior wall. You can accomplished this task in just a few minutes, using common household tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect all of the vertical studs to make sure they are firmly in place. Run a level vertically along each stud to verify that they are all square and plumb.

    • 2

Set a 2-inch by 4-inch header along the top of the interior studs, beginning at one end of the room. Lay it on top of the studs and verify that it is perfectly square. Set a level horizontally on top to make sure it is level.

    • 3

Set a stud-framing clip along the outside side of the vertical stud running up to the header. Insert framing nails into the provided holes on the clip. Hammer a 2-1/2-inch nail into each one of the holes, along the header and the front and side of the vertical stud.

Set a clip on the second stud and install it in the same manner as described in Step 3 to connect the two studs. Run the level to verify they are square and plumb, and continue down the wall, connecting the studs to the header until they are all attached.
