Cabinet Making 101

Cabinets are indispensable for storing items in the kitchen, bathroom or workshop. Save money by making your own units at home. You can use plywood to construct the basic cabinet box, which is called a carcass. This is then trimmed with wood molding and fitted with a door, depending on the application. Instructions

    • 1

Decide on the size and configuration of the cabinet, then determine its dimensions. To help you visualize the project, make a simple drawing to scale based on the measurements.

    • 2

Buy the wood from a local lumber supplier. Buy the amounts based on your plans. If you intend to paint the cabinet, you can select lower grade wood. Save time by having the plywood sections cut to the appropriate sizes at the lumber supply store. Most will do this for free or at a nominal cost. Regardless of who cuts the wood, double check all measurements beforehand. If you are unsure of some dimensions, ask the store representative for assistance.

    • 3

Assemble the top, bottom and sides of the cabinet and join them together using glue and finishing nails. Use common butt joints to simplify the project. If you elected to have shelves, insert these in the unit at the appropriate heights, and secure them by driving finishing nails through the cabinet sides into the shelf edges. If the shelves need to support heavier weight, install cove molding along the bottom edges of the joints.

Measure and cut two pieces of 1-by-2 lumber to be used as wall cleats. Use the cabinet's inside horizontal measurement as your guide. Locate the wall studs where you intend to install the cabinet. Attach the cleats to the wall studs securely using 3-1/2 inch wood screws or large nails. The cleats should fit under the cabinet's top and bottom edges.

Attach the door to the cabinet with appropriate size hinges. Install the door handle of your choice.

Add trim molding if desired. Sand all exposed surfaces smooth, remove the dust by wiping with a clean rag and apply two coats of the finish of your choice.
