How to Build an RV Pole Barn

Pole barns are an efficient and often economical choice of RV housing, and are used in a variety of applications, including to provide shelter for livestock and equipment. The construction of a pole barn will require having more than one individual to assist. Always check into local and state zoning and building codes before beginning construction.

Instructions

    • 1

Plan to erect your pole barn on a patch of level ground, preferably with non-clay soil free of gravel. Figure that the length and width of your pole barn will be at least 8 feet longer and wider than your RV. Round these final measurements up to the nearest 8-foot mark, as pole buildings are usually constructed in 8-foot sections to accommodate the size of siding and roofing panels.

    • 2

Place the building's post holes at the corners and roughly 8 feet apart on the sides. Dig the post holes at least 18 inches across and a minimum of 3 feet deep.

    • 3

Place the poles within the holes, using a carpenter's level to confirm alignment. Brace the poles with 2x4s, then, using a wheelbarrow to mix in, prepare roughly one bag of concrete for each hole. It should be mixed until it has a thick, muddy consistency, then poured or shoveled into the hole. Concrete should be allowed to set for several precipitation-free days.

    • 4

Nail 2x8s across the tops of the poles to begin the process of framing the pole barn. Nail prefabricated trusses along the 2x8s.

    • 5

Overlap roofing segments as you attach them to the trusses, working your way up the roof rather than down. Roofing hardware should be used with your roof sections, and may be provided with their purchase.

    • 6

Install the metal roof cap after all the roofing has been attached.

    • 7

Finish floors by pouring concrete or dumping and smoothing pea gravel.

    • 8

Fit and install siding, if desired or required by local codes.

    • 9

Frame in and install doors if siding was also installed.
